Dear Friend of Social Justice,

We invite you to join us and/or be a sponsor of the 2014 Labor and Human Rights Connection Celebration, a fundraising event to benefit our Employee Rights Center (ERC) in San Diego on behalf of all disadvantaged workers.  Our celebration will occur on Wednesday, April 30th starting at 5:30 pm on the top floor and balcony of Thomas Jefferson School of Law, 1155 Island Avenue.  This year’s program will celebrate the First 15 years of the Center’s work with low income immigrant workers throughout San Diego County.

The Center is the main program of Labor’s Training & Community Development Alliance, a local 501c3 organization, and it is the only local nonprofit organization to focus on issues of employment, labor, and immigration law.  Since 1999, the ERC has provided San Diego area workers education and advocacy services to combat wage theft, gain their eligibility for unemployment insurance and improve their immigration status.  The ERC represents those disadvantaged workers without union protection and without the means to hire an attorney.

The ERC also engages in community outreach to provide community-based organizations and their constituents with information about workers’ and immigrants’ rights that can help improve conditions for working families in their communities.  An outstanding example of this work is ERC’s partnership with the United Taxi Drivers of San Diego (UTWSD), where it adds its legal services and organizing resources to their ongoing fight for workplace justice.

Also, the ERC is a leading member of the San Diego Naturalization Collaborative, one of seven local groups that have created a county-wide coordination of non-profit legal services designed to increase the opportunities for our large immigrant population to become citizens.

Last year’s major sponsors included the American Federation of Teachers, United Domestic Workers/AFSCME, International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, UFCW, several local law firms and local social justice organizations. Many leaders from labor, civil liberties, and human rights organizations gathered to celebrate our unity, support the important work of the ERC and identify our potential collaborations for improving human rights.  Please join in our celebration!

Today’s economic strain disproportionately affects the most vulnerable workers. We need friends and allies like you to help sustain the ERC’s efforts.  Please join us in our fight against the inequitable treatment of disadvantaged workers and for their efforts to gain self-sufficiency in the community and justice on the job.  Come celebrate with us on April 30th!
